YEAR 68;
Failure followed failure, but somehow the people around him think he's doing well. Sasuke starts the year in confidence and middles it startled by his brother finally recommending him for jounin. There is no slow easing into jounin life; after his first mission as a lead he's yanked unceremoniously into T&I. This works twofold: the seals that were one failure (a best friend hospitalized) are now a torture device, and a means to satisfy his unexpected tug into informational intrigue via unhappy rumourmongering. The year closed with less confidence, more skill, and the repeated lesson of knowing pragmatism over feeling.
In his personal life, there was an unexpected widening of the divide between himself and his brother -- not in skill, as he's always feared, but in time and space. The latter half of his year is spent more away from home than in it. If there was romance, it happened to Sasuke more than with Sasuke, but he's made -- acquaintances, certainly. Friends, it remains to be seen.

There was a point, right at the end of last year, when this new one seemed more about settling into a role he thought he knew and the continuation of the life he already does. Four days into the new year, that expectation disappeared. Sasuke starts his first full year as jounin grappling with things he thought fundamental; his loyalty to his village, what that loyalty means, and what price he's willing to pay for it.
Just before the bomb drops that Itachi is abdicating his position as clan heir apparent, Sasuke is captured and subjected to -- very reasonable treatment indeed, at first. (At the end, there's the indelible sense-memory of crushing a teammate's eyes with his own hands.) But the things he learns about how the small village alliance operates and their grievances are food for thought, and he finds himself with plenty of time to think in the immediate aftermath as he's taken from active-duty to adopt his cousin's team for the time being. War is clearly on the horizon, and he's learning that shinobi bodies and lives are nothing more than currency.
